Haley Bell

BFA in Studio Art, Graphic Design emphasis

I sort of stumbled into this role as a designer. Going to college, my intentions were never to study studio arts but after a first year of confusion and struggles with grades, the only class I was even remotely interested in was my general education art class. I explored the field more and next thing I knew I was undergoing foundation review and applying for the graphic design program.

The next four years involved me finding myself as a person and as an artist. I played with projects, played with type and color and hierarchy and imagery until I discovered the trends I seem to cling to and what draws my attention as a designer. I discovered my love for minimal art, high contrast, and bold type. I also subconsciously swayed toward a use of black and white almost entirely. With design I look at things with a wide lens; I make sure all of the parts are cohesive and everything flows together as one style. I find it essential to disect the whole into its multiple parts when creating design for an individual client or brand. Each project is separate from the rest.

Flourish Houseplant Shop

About the Project

Over the course of this semester for my senior thesis I focused on a subject matter I love – houseplants. I wanted to create a houseplant shop that I would love to see in the real world. To me, houseplants are an aesthetic choice but they also encourage good health, motivation and productivity when they are used in a space. I wanted to highlight the multitude of benefits houseplants give while showcasing their natural beauty. My love for minimalism and black and white design showed in this project, using only a pop of a leafy green to accent the imagery and text at hand. Minimalism in this aspect can relate to the airy and fresh feel that plants bring to us.
